Slag is a partially vitreous by-product of the process of smelting ore, which separates the desired metal fraction from the unwanted fraction. Ground granulated slag is often used in concrete in combination with Portland cement as part of a blended cement.

Concrete containing ground granulated slag develops strength over a longer period, leading to reduced permeability and better durability. The largest-volume of recycled material used as construction aggregate is blast furnace and steel furnace slag.

This previously unwanted recycled product is used in the manufacture of high performance concretes, especially those used in the construction of bridges and coastal features. The slag can also be used to create fibers used as an insulation material named slag wool.

Particles that are bigger than the apertures of the screens are retained, and constitute the oversize. Conversely, those that are smaller pass through the screening surface, forming the undersize.
